Algeria Presidential Elections 2024 - Energy Potential and Geopolitical Dynamics

On September 7, presidential election was held in Algeria, where the incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune won with the support of 94.65% of voters. This marks Tebboune's second election victory since, after two decades in power, Abdelaziz Bouteflika stepped down in 2019. In Algeria, the military continues to play a significant role in politics. Algeria has gained attention as a key energy supplier to Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the European Union's efforts to reduce dependence on Russian gas and oil. Over the past two years, this situation has led to numerous high-level state visits from EU capitals to Algiers. Geopolitically, Algeria is using its proximity to the EU as an energy supplier with its Union for the Mediterranean membership. It has been one of the world's largest importer of weapons, primarily from Russia, and maintains strong trade ties with China, its leading trading partner. The country faces economic challenges, regional tensions with Morocco, insurgencies in the Sahel, and instability in neighbouring Libya. Additionally, climate change poses a significant threat to the country, as demonstrated by recent wildfires and droughts in recent years.
