FUTURA

The Polish government has approved the draft legislation necessary for the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant. The construction, valued at €14 billion, is expected to begin in 2026, with the first reactor to be operational in 2033. The plant will use AP1000 reactors designed by the American company Westinghouse. In total, the plan includes the construction of 6 reactors with a combined installed capacity of 6 to 9 GW.

The project is of significant importance for diversifying and decarbonizing Poland's energy mix, which is still heavily reliant on coal (Poland is the second-largest coal producer in Europe after Germany). The project also strengthens Poland's energy self-sufficiency and security. In addition to developing defense and security, this is another strategic area where Poland is deepening its cooperation with the United States. The development of nuclear energy in Poland, following massive investments in defense and security, could further enhance the strategic role that Poland plays in the Central and Eastern European region, as well as on NATO's and the EU's eastern flank.
