Presidential election in Tunisia

09/10/2024

Tunisia's presidential election held on 6 October 2024 was won by incumbent President Kais Saied with 90.69%. It was the third election since the overthrow of the government of authoritarian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011 during mass protests that marked the beginning of the Arab Spring in the Middle East and North Africa region. Tunisia maintained democratic principles over the last decade. This has changed following a series of moves by the current president, who , with the tacit support of the army, suspended the parliament in 2021 and repressed the judiciary and the opposition. Although the population initially welcomed Said's steps, which were seen to move the country towards greater stability. The recent elections signal dissatisfaction with the failure to address the key concerns of the country's population, as voter turnout was a record low 28,8 %, half of the first elections in 2014 (60,34 %) and in 2019 (55,02 %). Tunisia is plagued by a number of economic problems, including the absence of structural reforms, corruption, and most recently the hardening of the authoritarian regime. Inflation is rising, GDP growth is falling, and public debt has doubled in the past decade. These indicators point to an unflattering economic situation for the country. If fundamental reforms are not made, the country could face more serious economic and possibly political instability.
