The world in 2084

15/07/2024

If the expectations of the medium variant for world population development according to the July forecast by the UN (World Population Prospects 2024) are fulfilled, the world population will reach its peak in 2084. However, the world will look different than we know it today. Half of humanity will be concentrated in the 10 largest countries in the world in the following order:

1. India
2. China
3. Pakistan
4. Nigeria
5. USA
6. Democratic Republic of the Congo
7. Ethiopia
8. Indonesia
9. Bangladesh
10. Tanzania.

None of the top 10 countries will be from Europe, but the EU as a whole would rank seventh, and if by then the EU enlarged to include all current candidate countries, it would even reach fourth place. Even in that case, however, the EU would represent only 4.6% of the world population. The most populous country, India, would represent 15.8% of the population.
